SDC is proud to announce the successful completion of The Optic, a 95,000 sq. ft office and laboratory space at Peterhouse Technology Park.

Developed in partnership with British Land and architects Scott Brownrigg, this state-of-the-art facility showcases SDC’s expertise in delivering high-specification, future-ready buildings for the life sciences and technology sectors.

As the main contractor, SDC played a pivotal role in transforming the vision of The Optic into reality, ensuring the project was completed on schedule and to the highest standards. This facility will support Cambridge’s thriving science, technology, and research ecosystem, reinforcing its place within the UK’s Golden Triangle of innovation.

The Optic’s design required a meticulous approach, with a three-storey post-tensioned reinforced concrete frame providing structural strength and aesthetic appeal through its exposed concrete soffits. Sustainable features include a green roof, photovoltaic array, and timber-clad cycle store, reflecting the project’s commitment to environmental responsibility. The Cat A fit-out by SDC includes premium reception areas, toilets, and shower facilities, as well as a striking metal staircase and sliding pocket doors. Roof terraces offering 2,500 sq. ft of leisure space and extensive EV charging points focus on user experience and meeting the demands of modern businesses.

Sustainability was a key driver throughout the project, with reclaimed materials, a fully electric energy system, and a target of an ‘Excellent’ BREEAM rating, demonstrating SDC’s commitment to environmentally responsible construction. The design also includes step-free entrances, slip-resistant flooring, and Changing Places cubicles for accessibility, while outdoor spaces feature level access and block paving for ease of movement.

SDC’s collaboration with the local community was another highlight, with Fulbourn Primary School pupils taking part in career workshops and contributing to public art. SDC maintained open communication with stakeholders, including ARM plc, ensuring The Optic integrates seamlessly into Peterhouse Technology Park. Public art by artist Nathaniel Rackowe adds a distinctive touch to the building.

With The Optic now handed over, SDC is thrilled to have contributed to a facility that will drive innovation, collaboration, and growth in Cambridge’s dynamic life sciences and technology sectors. As a company, SDC remains committed to delivering spaces that inspire progress while leaving a positive legacy for communities and the environment.
