Community

Being actively involved and investing in the people and places that make our communities is important to us.

Community Fund

Established in 2015, our Community Fund allocates a portion of SDC’s annual profits to support local charities and initiatives. This includes both one-time donations and ongoing sponsorships. We have supported organisations such as the Bedford MS Centre, Bromham Scouts Hut, and Bedford Foodbank, providing resources and a skilled team to help realise these community projects.

Apprenticeships & Management Trainee Programme

We’re committed to nurturing local talent. We provide apprenticeships in trades such as bricklaying and carpentry, as well as a Management Trainee Programme. The programme is designed around fast-track training plans and focused experience across multiple departments, offering a well-rounded understanding of how the organisation works. This prepares trainees to step into roles that will unlock their full potential.

Education & Careers

We collaborate with local schools and universities to organise site tours, mock interviews, and workshops. At Peterhouse Technology Park, the team worked with Fulbourn Primary School on a mock tender project, helping pupils develop teamwork and problem-solving skills. We are dedicated to inspiring the next generation in building the future.

Local Sponsorships

We have a longstanding relationship with Bedford Blues Rugby Club, sponsoring the team for over 25 years. This partnership strengthens our community ties through our involvement in the Blues Foundation and supports the club in providing top-tier games for the local fans each season.

Public Realm Refurbishments

We are dedicated to revitalising public spaces, enhancing community areas to improve accessibility, aesthetics, and sustainability. Recently, we refurbished the facilities at Great Addington Primary School, with our Management Trainees taking a direct role in managing the project, from planning through to construction. Additionally, we have made refurbishments at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, creating a relaxing garden space for both patients and staff as part of their broader community support and well-being.
