Project Overview
This project involved the design and construction of a new Science Block at Bedford Modern School, replacing outdated facilities that had been largely unchanged since 1974.

SDC was appointed to design and construct a new Science Block that stimulates spontaneous working and creativity.
The works included the demolition of an existing single-storey building and the construction of a state-of-the-art science facility.
Built with a concrete frame, the 2,600m² building is clad using a combination of rainscreen cladding and curtain walling, with brise soleil fitted for solar control.

Internally, the building is designed to be conducive to learning, with collaborative working spaces that are calm, light, and airy.
There are 17 teaching laboratories and associated preparatory rooms split across 3 floors, with each scientific discipline (Chemistry, Physics, and Biology) occupying its own floor.
There is a triple-height central atrium space which provides a link between the tiered subject laboratories and creates a more informal area for flexible teaching and displays, and a forum space which provides areas for demonstration and exhibitions.
SDC’s work also comprised an extensive drainage and external works package, including hard and soft landscaping. The building achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’.
